Understanding Why

Proud Heritage is seeking to reformulate how a museum can be in the 21st Century

Why is that important?

Because in 99% of the permanent exhibitions in British museums or archives LGBT people and our cultural forebears are simply invisible. it’s as though our lives and those upon whose shoulders we stand never existed, or else are not important enough to merit year-round inclusion.

Since 2005, we have been carefully researching just why that is. We have found evidence of homophobic and transphobic practices – both intentional and unintentional – and we have come to understand the unique challenges our heritage creates. For more about this check out the PROUD NATION wing when it opens in May.

We have worked closely with some of the leading figures in Britain responsible for thinking ahead, training future museum personnel, and for standards in collections management.

That’s why we have been endorsed by:

Richard Sandell, Director of the Museum Studies Dept. of Leicester University

Suzanne Keene, the Head of the Museum Studies programme at University College London

and Nick Poole, Director of the Collections Trust, responsible for standards in British Museums.

Alongside the Heritage sector, we have worked hard to consult with community projects across Britain.

Ben Summerskill, the Director of Stonewall publicly endorsed Proud Heritage at its launch.

Here is what Suzanne, Nick and Ben had to say.
